In ubiquitous environment where numerous kinds of services exist, the service discovery protocol provides a mean for dynamically discovering the services without any detail knowledge on the underlying structure. Even though various discovery approaches, comparative analysis showing relative effectiveness is lacking. In this paper we select and model Jini and UPnP as the representative three-way and two-way discovery structure, respectively, for studying the performance of service discovery protocol. The comparison reveals that Jini is more efficient than UPnP protocol in terms of required bandwidth for relatively small area of few devices. With a large number of lookup services in MAN or WAN, UPnP protocol is preferred.
